British hopes at Wimbledon are over in the singles after Katie Boulter was crushed by defending champion Elena Rybakina late in the night on Centre Court.

Boulter was the last British player standing after Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie and Liam Broady were knocked out on Friday but Rybakina produced a dominant performance to win 6-1 6-1 in just 56 minutes.

Last night, Murray questioned whether he has the motivation to return to Wimbledon next year after a heartbreaking five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitisipas ended his hopes at the Championships.

Earlier, Carlos Alcaraz passed a tough test of his Wimbledon ambitions after battling to a four-set victory over Nicolas Jarry to reach the fourth round.

The world No 1 was pushed to the limit by Jarry’s big serve and powerful forehand but prevailed 6-3 6-7 6-3 7-6 in almost four hours of play, which pushed Boulter’s match against Rybakina late into the evening.

Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek return to top billing on Centre Court as the fourth round of the Championships get underway on the tournament’s middle Sunday.

Djokovic will continue his bid for a fifth consecutive Wimbledon title and the big-serving Polish player Hubert Hurkacz is set to be his toughest challenge yet at the All England Club.

The Serbian, who raced past Stan Wawrinka on Saturday night, has yet to drop a set this week and will look to extend his winning run at Wimbledon to 32 matches against the 17th seed.

Swiatek takes on the Olympic champion Belinda Bencic, while Ukrainian wildcard Elina Svitolina faces former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka as she looks to continue her comeback run.

The scoreboard told the story. After 56 minutes of complete domination, of punishing forehands and thumping serves from the racket of Elena Rybakina, Katie Boulter’s exit was as swift as the contest that had preceded it. Boulter had waited all afternoon and into the evening to take to Centre Court and for the match of the day to arrive, but as the defending Wimbledon champion closed out a 6-1 6-1 win that was as completely one-sided as it looks, Boulter was relieved for it all to be over.

“Today I played really well, and really happy with my performance. I was focused from the beginning till the end. Yeah, really happy with this one.

“Now I feel much more confident on Centre Court . I’m feeling much better physically. Still I think not at my best. But also with every match I think I’m getting fitter.

“After French Open, was not easy. Took me a long time. Also long time to do the fitness. It was not easy after the virus. Muscle pain and everything.

“I feel now that I just got a lot of experience, getting more mature, I will say. The goals are still the same. I know that I still have to work a lot. There is always to improve in many aspects of the game. Also physically.

“Obviously a really tough match against a tough competitor. I gave it my best today. I wouldn’t say I really felt like I got into the match fully.

“She’s clearly the defending champion for a reason, and I learnt a lot today and that’s what I’m going to have to take from today’s match.

“It’s a tough one. Yes, it does [feel different playing Rybakina]. Obviously it’s a lot quicker and the majority of girls, they don’t quite hit the ball like that. It’s quite flat. You don’t really see where she’s going. She disguises it very well.

“So for me, I struggled with it a lot today. You know, it felt like I got into it a little bit at times and I started to pick up her ball but she was relentless at the end of the day. She was the much better player.”

The epic game continues… Alcaraz challenges a baseline ball from Jarry, but finds it clips the line by an inch! Jarry pushed for the hold but Alcaraz reaches the drop shot, and Jarry can’t clear the net to pick-up the angled shot at the net!

But Jarry gets the HUGE hold! He finds his first serve and two returns go long of the baseline!

What a game! Jarry looked comfortable and about to take a 3-0 lead, but Alcaraz showed great defence on the return and dared to target the lines with the return! It means he claws his way to break point but Jarry responds with a serve and volley to save!

Alcaraz clips the net-cord to stay in the game, and then again with the forehand pass!

Pressure back on Jarry, but the forehand lets him down! Another break point for Alcaraz…

Just as he did at the start of the second, Jarry breaks the Alcaraz serve at the start of the fourth! That, to be polite, was an awful game from Alcaraz with a poor backhand error and two double faults giving Jarry the chance. On break point, Jarry plays an excellent defensive point but Alcaraz missed the chance to come forward to the net!

Carlos Alcaraz makes no mistake to close out the third set and retake the lead against Nicolas Jarry. The Spaniard carries on the level he found in the tiebreak with his forehand strike and made very few mistakes from the baseline there. Jarry dropped from the first two sets and that really was the difference.

Medvedev continues his progress at Wimbledon! The third seed sees off the challenge of Marton Fucsovics, who played a great first set and then battled on through an ankle injury in the third and fourth, as well as saving three match points. But credit to Medvedev, that wasn’t easy but the gets the job done. The Russian is giving himself every chance of having a deep run at SW19.

Medvedev on reaching the fourth round on grass: “Very tough match, three hours. Marton plays well on grass. He’s been to the quarters, which is more than me. He’s a tough player to play against. I’m very happy that after the first set I could be more decisive. I’m very happy to be through.

“I really want to do well here. I didn’t play last year and it’s so far been my worst grand slam. I have a lot of motivation to change that. What I love about the Wimbledon crowd is they always go for the one that is losing! Which is fun. It’s tough for the one that is winning, but it’s fair!”

This is like an exhibition game from Alcaraz, flashing two stunning dropping shots over the net. Jarry plays a solid couple of points himself to get to 30-30, but Alcaraz is able to hold.

Now, a chance for Alcaraz. Jarry mishits, and then Alcaraz takes advantage with a stunning forehand winner on the run! Huge roar from Alcaraz!

Suddenly as Jarry nets on the forehand, Alcaraz gets two break points. Long from Jarry! A few errors from the Chilean there but also plenty of Alcaraz magic as the Spaniard breaks.

Ah! Worrying moment as Alcaraz slips behind the baseline, his right leg bending awkardly at the knee. He’s quickly back on his feet and gives a thumbs up, so he looks fine to continue.

Jarry gets his hold after that. Alcaraz had break point in this game but the Chilean saved with a calm serve and volley approach.

Suddenly there are lots of top men’s players in action across the grounds. Stefanos Tsitsipas is back in action after finishing off his five-set win against Andy Murray and the Greek returns against the Serbian Laslo Djere (trying not to think about how good of a match that would have been for Murray).

Holger Rune, the sixth seed, is also in action and leads the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina by a set on Court No 3, and it’s on serve in the second.

Daniil Medvedev is also closing in on the third round and is a break up against Fucsovics in the fourth.

Much steadier progress for Daniil Medvedev on Court One. Amid some arguments and disagreements from Fucsovics over line calls, Medvedev thumps a big serve out wide to win the third. Fucsovics was upset over the opening point of the game, where Medevedev was scrambling back and flicked the forehand cross. Fucsovics angled a pick-up volley in return, but it was called out. Medvedev, serving much better now, held from there.

Suddenly a bit loose from Jarry as the end of the second set approaches… two wild forehand swings see Alcaraz get a look at break point. But it’s followed by an ace from Jarry! Then the forehand winner that clips the line!

But then the game turns again. There’s another forehand miss from Jarry before Alcaraz plays a low, testing forehand. Jarry goes into the net on the volley!

The Chilean plays a perfect backhand into the corner and moves in to meet a crisp volley that even Alcaraz can’t reach.
