Who is Quique Setien?

The new Barcelona manager has been out of work since leaving Real Betis at the end of last season. The Spaniard was not sacked, rather walked away after a very successful spell in which he took the club back into Europe, securing a 6th place finish in his first season at the club. He increased the value and reputation of the club, both on and off the pitch.

He has been lauded for the brand of football he plays and there was a feeling in Spain that the reason he left Betis (by mutual consent) was because he was already being courted by the bigger teams in the league. With this swift appointment, it’s hard not to imagine that Barcelona was discussing the possibility of managing Blaugrana with Setien in the weeks before Valverde was relieved of his duties.

It was also widely reported that Xavi was offered the role, but refused to discuss a contract whilst his former club still had a manager. Pep Guardiola spoke out against the way Valverde has been treated by the current Barcelona board.

Quique Setien Stats

The records at FootyStats indicate that Setien has managed 243 games across his career, with a win percentage of 32%. It’s not outstanding by any means, but you must take into account the teams he has been managing. His highest PPG (Points Per Game) total across a season came in 2014/2015 whilst in charge of Las Palmas. By comparison, Ernesto Valverde has a win percentage of 54.95% across his managerial career.
