New Contract, Number and More for Ansu Fati as He Continues To Impress at Barcelona

This time last year, you would do well to find any football fans that had heard of Ansu Fati. Now, with Barcelona looking firmly to the future, the 16-year-old from Guinea-Bissau has burst onto the scene and is set to be rewarded for his early contributions with a new contract, signifying his increased importance to the future of Barcelona.

Multiple respected journalists in Spain have reported that Barcelona is no longer willing to let Fati leave the first-team setup due to the way he has both adapted to his new surroundings and how he has been performing on the pitch. Initially, the Valverde had planned to keep the forward with the first team over the summer before allowing him to play for the youth sides once more.

With Lionel Messi out injured at the start of the season, Fati got his chance. He scored in consecutive games against Valencia and Osasuna, with Fati’s performance against Valencia a particular highlight.

Unfortunately for Fati, he then injured his knee and has only recently returned to action.

However, his exploits in the opening weeks of the season were enough to convince the powers that be at Barcelona that his current buy-out clause of €100m is not enough. A new contract is being prepared for the winger, who turns 17 later this month, and the new buy-out clause is expected to be double the previous amount. A sign of trust and also the expectation that Barcelona has for Ansu Fati, a boy that has been at the Barcelona academy since the age of 10.

He’s clearly living his dream, but the feel-good factor of this story does not stop there. He’s recently drawn praise from some of the biggest names in football, but most notably from Real Madrid legend Raul. He praised the immense talent shown from Fati, but also urged clubs to show patience with academy players and that their enjoyment of football should come first. Raul is currently the manager of the Real Madrid Castilla side.

So, what next for Fati? Well, more money for one, but more importantly a defined role within the first team and a new squad number to signify his importance to this growing team. The next few years should be interesting, with both Messi and Suarez coming to the end of their careers. It’s also true that big-money signings such as Dembele and Coutinho have not lived up to their price tags.

So, is it time for another academy player to lead the club to glory?
